Plumbing Apprenticeships in England & Wales

The Plumbing Academy has recently gained funding for the training of young apprentice plumbers (aged between 16 – 18). The key advantage of The Academy’s apprenticeship programme is its employment scheme; the apprentice is employed by the Plumbing Academy, who then hire them out on short-term contracts to an employer. Apprentices get the benefit of on-the-job training, while employers get the benefits of an apprentice without any of the stress or administrative responsibility.

James Shaw of JMS Heating and Plumbing, Sevenoaks, took on an apprentice (Scott Sankey, 18) from the Plumbing Academy when he had more work on than he could cope with himself:

“Business was very busy but at the same time I didn’t have quite enough work on the order books to justify employing a fully qualified plumber. Getting a good apprentice plumber on board was the ideal solution. Additionally, the fact that I could get an apprentice on a trial basis, without any need for a long-term commitment was the key to my decision to go down this route. If the apprentice is not working out I can send them back to The Academy, without any come back on me.

The Academy effectively acts as an agency. It takes all the risk away from me. When Scott went back to The Academy to do more training for two months, I had another apprentice fill-in for that period” said Mr Shaw.

Scott Sankey, who lives just 7 miles from one of our training centres, started his course at The Academy in November 2010. He didn’t want to go to university and on researching plumbing decided this was the career for him. Now 18 years old, he has completed his NVQ level 2 in plumbing and is currently doing his NVQ level 3. This will provide him with gas safe registration. “I’m really interested in my career. With all the developments in renewable energy it’s a very exciting time to be involved in plumbing and heating,” he said.

The Plumbing Academy boasts a pass rate of over 98 percent. With several training centres throughout Southern England, South Wales, and the South West, we have the capacity to provide training in all aspects of plumbing, gas, and renewable energy.
